The Gambia celebrates its National Day at Expo Milano 2015

On Saturday September 5th, The Gambia celebrated its National Day in Expo Milano 2015. After the flag-raising and national anthem ceremony, speeches were made by Gioacchino Alfano (Italy’s Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Defense) and Abdou Jobe (Gambia’s Minister of Trade). Both expressed appreciation for the cooperative relationship between the two countries which made it possible for The Gambia to be present at the Universal Exposition in the Fruit and Legumes Cluster. Both speeches underlined the commitment of the Government and people of The Gambia to increase Food Security and reduce poverty, especially by supporting medium, small and micro farming enterprises and by creating an economic model encouraging investment. After the speeches, the celebrations continued with the explosive exhibition of the Jola Group, offering the contagious energy of their traditional percussive music, singing and dancing. The party atmosphere then paraded along the Decumano to Gambia’s Pavilion in the Fruit and Legumes Cluster, where it offered visitors a tasting event with The Gambia’s intense gastronomic specialties. The National Day continued in evening with a performance by the Akora Troupe, a traditional music ensemble using the ballad-singer convention of the Griots, storytelling singers who accompany themselves on a Kora, a traditional harp made with a large pumpkin.
