“I’m really fascinated by the possibility of meeting women today that I have only heard about, but while here I can finally meet them. Meeting such inspiring leaders face to face, and learning from them, is so important for young women.” The occasion of such significant encounters forKhalida Brohi, founder and executive director of Sughar-Women with Wings, was the Save The Children encounter “Starting from girls: they are the source to trigger a change!”, held as part of the Women’s Weeks program of events. The discussion, focused on the basic theme of worldwide adolescent empowerment, offered various perspectives for debate, particularly on how to offer a better future for adolescent girls, and was organized in the context of the WE-Women For Expo program, in collaboration with Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and with the Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori Foundation.
An alliance between women, but also involving men
Khalida Brohiis a 26-year-old Pakistani woman who founded a non-profit social enterprise in Pakistan to offer opportunities to women from tribal and rural areas, aiming to increase their skills and self-confidence in order to create leadership abilities from the perspective of future development. “Creating an alliance to counter malnutrition is extremely important, but men too must be involved in this process, because in many local communities in many countries it’s the husband who goes to the market and decides what to buy, while the women have to stay inside their homes without knowing what they are going to eat. Sometimes they have nothing to eat until their husbands return, which may well take a long time”- explainedBrohiin a video interview on ExpoNet.
The cycle of events named "The Other Half of the World - Women's Weeks" will continue in Expo Milano 2015 until July 10, offering various other occasions for debate on the great challenges of food and women’s empowerment.
