  • Trout, European perch and crayfish: the surface of Lake Como and Lecco conceals a world that is just as beautiful as that of the villas on its banks. The event held on Saturday, August 1 in Palazzo Italia was dedicated to that delicate submerged treasure and the professional fishermen who have chosen it as their means of sustenance. Hosted by the School Nursery in Palazzo Italia, the meeting was organized by Proteus, the environmental education association from Como. In front of an enthralled public of children and young people accompanied by their parents, professional educator Paola Lotti of Proteus explained how professional fishing in the waters of Como can be done in harmony with the environment.

Respecting the lake begins as child’s play
Winner of a competition posted by the Chamber of Commerce in Como, Proteus is participating in the activities of the School Nursery, and in particular those that concern educating the youngest members of our society about the environment. Active since 1999, the association has a long experience in this field, thanks to the many projects that it has been working on for years in the area. One of the most striking presented during the meeting on Saturday August 1 is Lake Watching, which consists in offering “virtual” tours of the lake bed thanks to a live video link with a real submarine immersed in its waters, equipped with webcam and microphone for interacting directly with the public in the hall. Others concern the reproduction and repopulation of rare fish species and the collaboration with ESA for the use of satellite data to study the state of health of the lake and mountain environment.

Lake fishing: an ancient trade to be rediscovered
The trade of the lake fisherman is an ancient one, in which it is difficult to distinguish the job itself from the sincere passion that lies behind it. After a period of crisis during which it seemed to disappear due to pollution and the depletion of the fish resources, over the last few years it is witnessing a certain recovery. “In our work, we meet many young people who have decided to become fishermen as a lifestyle choice, motivated by their grand passion for the lake, which repays their hard work and sacrifices – explains Paola Lotti. – They are a new generation of fishermen, who are passionate about the lake environment and its banks, and we have been working closely with them in a way that is extremely useful for both sides. Over the last few years, people have become more aware of how delicate the lake eco-system is and a large network of parties that participate in its protection has been created: not only the fishermen, but also the restaurant owners who only choose to offer seasonal species and a large number of divers, who help to clean the lake beds, in addition to installing and maintaining the structures that help the fish to reproduce”.
