The Swiss authorities travelled together from Zurich directly to the Expo Milano site in
“The Taste Train”, where they already tasted gastronomic creations by the famed Swiss chef
Georges Wenger. A celebration which continued in the Expo site, based on the sheer variety of its gastronomic and regional traditions. Underlining the cultural value of these differences,
Johann Schneider-Ammann explained that “thanks to the spirit of solidarity and freedom which distinguishes the Swiss people, in our country different languages, religions, cultures and traditions is the key to our unity.” The same concept was expressed by
Claude Hêche, who spoke of the historic friendship with Italy as another confirmation that “differences widen our perceptions of the world.” The Swiss and Italian delegations had their institutional meeting, after which the celebrations continued in the
Swiss Pavilion, accompanied by
Miss Switzerland,
Laetitia Guarino, and the rousing music of the
Swiss Military Brass Band. During the day a traditional rustic brunch was offered to the public, featuring tastings of regional specialities offered by the prizewinning producers from the nationwide Regional Product Competition.
