  • To avoid wasting food unnecessarily, there are some basic rules that everyone can follow and help towards reducing the amount that is thrown every year unnecessarily. According to data of the National Observatory on Domestic Waste, every Italian throws 27 kilos of food that is still good every year, amounting to a cost, or better to economic damage, estimated at 454 euro per family.

    How to avoid waste

These rules were given by Barbara Paolini, a clinical nutritionist at the Hospital of Siena and Vice National Secretary of the Italian Association for Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition, at the meeting “Waste management with a healthy diet” held at the ME-WE Women for Expo inside the Italian Pavilion, organized by the Ministry of Health.

    Following a few basic rules

The first rule that cannot be ignored, is to go shopping on a full stomach to avoid being carried away by hunger and buy products that we don’t really need, and even exceeding in the amount. Then buy seasonal products, produced locally and store them in the refrigerator according to a specific criterion, namely those that expire first should be placed in front and the long-life ones behind. Always check the label carefully. Cook the correct amount, especially of pasta (the most wasted product in Italy) and try to invent new dishes with leftovers.
This will also help us keep fit because it avoids the embarrassment of that last bite that makes us overindulge while eating our meal and risk becoming overweight or obese. And if there is still food left when we have finished that's likely to be thrown away, the new frontier is food sharing, i.e. sharing excess food with friends, relatives, and also with people who need it through the help of associations with the objective of supporting those in need.
