  • A day of work that involved more than 40 scientific and university organizations, foundations and associations of citizens and patients interested in both the clinical and preventive aspects of nutritional disorders. The objective was to lay the foundations for a culture of nutrition that is not widespread in our Country today. The participants are also the stars of the "Manifest of Criticalities in clinical and preventive Nutrition for 2015-2018. The first 10 Italian challenges”, which analyzes and proposes strategies for tackling disorders such as excessive weight and obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and food disorders.

    The key players
Lucio Lucchin, organizer of the event and scientific Coordinator of the Manifest of Criticalities in clinical and preventive Nutrition, Enzo Grossi, scientific Advisor of the Italian Pavilion and the Bracco Foundation, Cesare Vaciago, Director of the Italian Pavilion and Giuseppe Ruocco, General Director for the Hygiene and Security of Food and Nutrition of the Ministry of Health took part in the event, among others. “The epidemic diffusion of incorrect lifestyles, which today costs no less than 30 billion euros a year in Italy for those related to nutrition, risks spiralling out of control in a few years if we do not make concrete changes – explained Lucio Lucchin -. The five million obese people present in Italy are countered by three million malnourished people in the hospitals, four million of sarcopenic old people who are almost ignored and six million very poor individuals, including 1.5 million children. These figures signal a need for action and the themes they represent cannot be tackled properly unless we formulate global strategies: we therefore need a multiprofessional involvement from scientists, health professionals, politicians, public administrators and citizens. The right solution is to reduce legitimate biases, joining our forces to  provide a shared mediation which aims to provide practical solutions to the issues tackled”.

    The future of nutrition
The works continued all afternoon with round tables dedicated to the future of clinical and preventive nutrition and to the role of the associations. In the conclusions, speakers included Lorenzo Maria Donini, President of the Italian society for the Study of Food Disorders and Francesco Leonardi, Vice president of Food Education Italy FEI. At the end of the event a take home message was issued to spread the issues tackled during the day on a global level.
